What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is used to enable the client to be guided into a deep level of relaxation, during which their subconscious mind is able to focus on and accept appropriate and beneficial life changing suggestions.

Most therapists have moved on from watch swinging and flickering candles to other simpler and faster ways of enabling the client to relax and focus on something that will distract their conscious mind, thereby inducing a trance-like state and heightened levels of awareness in the subconscious mind.

The therapist’s role is to guide the client into this calm, relaxed state. The client is still totally in control and will simply snap out of hypnosis if suggestions are made that are contrary to their wishes and values.

Once in hypnosis, the conscious mind is temporarily off duty and the door to the subconscious mind is opened. The therapist is then able to suggest new ideas, concepts and lifestyle changes to the client’s subconscious mind, which will help them to achieve their goals and enjoy a better quality of life.

The subconscious learns by repetition so by listening to the hypnosis as often as possible in their own time, the client will quickly start to notice that they are feeling more in control of their life. Clients will usually require between 2 and 4 sessions but even after the first session, they will see and feel better and start noticing how their quality of life is benefiting from the therapy.

Hypnotherapy is a useful tool for reprogramming faulty patterns of behaviour, negative mindsets and unhealthy habits such as addictions, suppressed emotions, fears, phobias and self esteem issues etc as well as helping with positive changes such as confidence building, motivation to succeed and many other attitude shifts, which help clients to lead a happier, healthier, more balanced and fulfilling life.

Yes – pretty much anyone, from young child through to adult, can be hypnotised. We all go in to the hypnotic state multiple times a day, without being aware of it. When you zone out whilst watching TV or listening to music, when you are daydreaming at work or driving but not aware of how you reached your destination i.e. driving on ‘auto-pilot’. These are all a version of hypnosis. Other times might be when you are feeling very relaxed and calm, for example if you are lying on a beach but not quite sleeping. In fact, we all go through a hypnotic state when we are drifting off to sleep. It is quite natural and normal but also a useful way of reaching the subconscious to make changes.

No. Clinical hypnosis is very different from stage hypnosis. You are free to accept or reject any suggestions made that you do not agree with. We have no interest in getting you to do things, or say things, or think things that are not true, or do not serve you. As hypnotherapists, our main aim is to help you leave here in a calmer, yet more in control, state than when you arrived.

Yes. You will be completely aware of everything around you wand will never lose contact with the hypnotherapist’s voice. Most clients say that they were completely aware of everything that was said during their hypnosis session; some people even say they have a heightened awareness while under hypnosis. Hypnosis is actually a half-way point between being awake and asleep – it’s called the Alpha State and everyone passes through this stage when they go to sleep.

No one has every remained in the hypnosis state indefinitely. Your conscious mind will always take back control simply and easily. Have you ever heard of anyone not coming out of a daydream?

Yes. You may still be feeling relaxed, but your actions and reactions will be functioning as normal. As with any kind of emotional experience, you may wish to take a few minutes to settle yourself and realign before you go. Our therapists will always save keep some time at the end of the appointment, for you to recalibrate after your hypnosis experience.

Everyone is different, but most people will report back saying they felt instantly lifted after their first session. The number of sessions you need depends on the type of issue you are looking for help with. Addictions and phobias typically require approximately three sessions, whereas other issues may need less and others may need more.
